513 students commit suicide in 2023: Achol Foundation

In 2023, 513 students had taken their own lives due to mental pressure, family conflicts, academic stress, and relationship issues.

Among the students who took their own lives, 227 were from schools, 140 from colleges, 98 from universities, and 48 from madrasas, as per a survey conducted by the Achol Foundation, which revealed this information during a press briefing on Saturday (27 January).

Among them, 60% of the total suicide-related deaths were women.

According to the survey data, students aged between 13 and 19 were the most vulnerable to suicide. Dhaka reported the highest number of suicide cases, with 149 instances.

The foundation reported that almost half of the students committed suicide due to emotional breakdowns and relationship problems.

Analyzing the causes of student suicides, Achol found that pride was the leading factor with 32%, followed by love affairs at 15%, mental health issues at 10%, family disputes at 6%, family violence at 1%, academic pressure at 5%, failing exams at 4%, failing to achieve desired results in public examinations at 2%, sexual harassment at 3%, and humiliation at 1%.
