Gold bars valued at approximately Tk1.28 crore were found in an abandoned cigarette packet at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram today.
The National Security Intelligence (NSI) team of Chattogram airport and the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) seized the gold bars in a joint operation following a tip-off.
Following the tip-off, NSI and CIID officials targeted flight number G9526, which arrived from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, at 9:19am.
They discovered a foreign brand cigarette packet abandoned on international arrival conveyor belt number two. They found 14 gold bars concealed within the cigarette packet taped with silver-colored Scotch, states a press release signed by Md Al Amin, revenue officer of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate's regional office in Chattogram.
The estimated market value of the seized gold is Tk1,28,16,000.
Legal proceedings concerning the confiscated gold are currently underway, added the press release.
