Tarique Rahman to be brought back to serve jail sentence: Foreign Minister

Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud stated that the government will bring back BNP's acting chairman Tarique Rahman to serve a jail sentence.

The finance minister made the comment after a courtesy meeting with British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday (January 24).

Tarique is accused in 15 other cases, mostly filed during the caretaker government rule in 2007 and 2008, and Zubaida has been indicted only in this one.

The Foreign Minister said, UK has always been one of our development partners and friends. A great partner in our development work. Multidimensional cooperation with the UK has also been discussed today. 

He said, we are already working with UK on climate change issue. There was a discussion about increasing the scope of this work in the future 

He also said that the United Kingdom has been cooperating wholeheartedly in solving the Rohingya problem since the beginning. Today's meeting also discussed this issue. The most important thing to solve the Rohingya problem is to ensure their civil rights and repatriate them.

Meanwhile, the British High Commissioner in Dhaka, Sarah Cook, has indicated that the United Kingdom's position will not change regarding the Bangladesh elections.

She said that the United Kingdom will work with the Bangladesh government and political parties on issues of human rights, elections and democracy.
