The High Court (HC) expressed deep concern about the environmental degradation in Dhaka.

“The rivers surrounding Dhaka are polluted, the air quality is poor, and the overall condition of Dhaka is deemed worrisome. We are alarmed by the environmental condition of Dhaka”said the High Court.

The court bench led by Justice K M Kamrul Kader and Justice Kizir Hayat made the statement on Thursday in response to a writ petition addressing the issue of illegal break fields in Dhaka.

Senior lawyer Manzil Morshed presented the writ in court, while Barrister Muntasir Uddin Ahmed represented the Department of Environment.

The court emphasized the need for industrialization in the country's economic development but stressed the importance of conducting it in harmony with environmental preservation.

The Hight court questioned whether the government is actively monitoring the rising cases of autism in the country, suggesting a potential link to environmental pollution.

Expressing frustration over the non-implementation of the order to halt illegal brick kilns, the High Court remarked, “We can impose penalties, but what is the outcome of those sentences? It's disheartening how many times we have to issue directives on these matters.”
