After being enlisted as a minister from the technocrat quota, Dr. Samanta Lal Sen, who has never been involved in politics, shared his excitement with the media, saying, "I never imagined. I became nervous when I received the call".
The eminent burn specialist currently dedicated to serving burn-injured patients and contributing to the development of the country’s burn institutes.
Dr Samanta Lal Sen was sworn as Health and Family Welfare Minister in the new cabinet division on Thursday.
He is currently serving Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery as chief coordinator. Besides, he is the chief coordinator of all burn projects of Bangladesh.
Dr Sen played a key role in running the burns unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital after the unit’s establishment in 1986 under plastic surgeon Dr Mohammad Shahidullah’s leadership.
Later he become familiar name in Bangladesh amid a spate of arson attacks and major fire incidents.
Professor Samanta Lal Sen says Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s decision to include him in her new cabinet as a minister has taken him by surprise.
“I am very surprised by this development. I don’t know how much I can do. I work with my [burns institutes]. And now I have a new role. Let me see. I can’t say anything now,” he told media in his immediate reaction.
Dr. Samanta Lal Sen born in Habiganj in November 1949. He received his MBBS degree from Chattogram Medical College in 1949. He
In 1980, he completed ‘Diploma in Specialized Surgery’ from Vienna. Later he achieved higher degrees in surgery from Germany and England.
The Bangla Academy honoured him with a fellowship in 2018 for his contribution to medical services.
He is also president of the Society of Plastic Surgeons of Bangladesh.
