Readymade garment workers in Gazipur have blocked road demanding payment of salary and annual (earned) leave in the new scale announced by the government.
The workers blocked the Mawna-Phulbari road from 9am to 12am in Shreepur of Gazipur on Thursday, said Shreepur Police Station Officer in-charge Md Shah Jaman.
According to the workers, the factory authorities are not implementing the increased salary announced by the government. Dissatisfaction has arisen among the workers due to the non-receipt of increased wages, leading them to take to the streets to voice their demands.
RMG workers have organized significant protest rallies, advocating for a minimum wage of Tk25,000 for all workers in the garment sector, considering the escalating commodity prices.
Following extensive protests, the government and the owners collaborated to raise the salary.
On November 12, the government published a gazette declaring a minimum wage of Tk12,500 monthly for garment workers and reducing the number of grades from seven to five.
However, the factory authorities have not implemented the wage increase.
