Bail hearing of Daily Star executive editor, wife on 21 March

A Dhaka court fixed 21 March for the bail hearing of Daily Star Executive Editor Syed Ashfaqul Haque and his wife Tania Khandker in the case of “negligent death” of a domestic worker who worked in their home.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Jaglul Hossain fixed the date on Thursday (14 March).

Earlier, the CMM court in Dhaka rejected their bail application.

After that, the lawyer of the accused applied for bail in the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court. 

On 6 February, a teenage domestic worker died after falling from the ninth floor of a residential building in Mohammadpur.

The 15-year-old girl named Preeti Urang used to work at the house of Syed Ashfaqul Haque, executive editor of Daily Star, a resident of that building.

A case was filed against Syed Ashfaqul Haque and his wife Tania Khandker on 7 February by Lokesh Urang, the father of Preeti.

The suit alleges wrongful death under Section 304(a).

Then they were arrested on 6 February. On 7 February, the court rejected the bail pleas of the accused and ordered them to be sent to jail.

The court ordered them to be interrogated at the jail gate.

On 13 February, given the 10-day remand application, the court granted them a four-day remand.

They were sent to jail after being remanded on 18 February.
