Airbnb announced on Monday that it will prohibit the use of security cameras inside guest homes, emphasising a commitment to privacy, reports AFP.
Previously, the platform allowed indoor security cameras in communal spaces like hallways and living rooms, provided they were clearly disclosed in listings.
However, reports surfaced on social media of guests discovering covert cameras in Airbnb accommodations, particularly in areas where privacy is expected.
In a blog post, the San Francisco-based company said, "Airbnb is implementing a global ban on indoor security cameras in listings as part of our efforts to streamline our policy regarding security devices and uphold the privacy of our community."
The updated policy, which also includes stricter regulations on outdoor security cameras, will take effect on 30 April.
Juniper Downs, head of community policy and partnerships, said, "The aim of providing clearer guidelines to the community. While doorbell cameras and noise monitors will still be allowed for security purposes and to identify unauthorised gatherings, hosts must disclose the presence and locations of outdoor security cameras."
These cameras are prohibited from monitoring sensitive areas like outdoor showers or saunas, according to Airbnb's announcement.
