Special arrangements will be made to control traffic before Iftar during Ramadan, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman said.
“Police will make special arrangements from 3pm to 7pm to control the traffic during Ramadan,” he said at a press conference following a coordination meeting regarding the overall security and traffic management in the Dhaka during Ramadan on Monday (11 March).
“At the same time, we will have special deployments on the streets so that people can go home and eat iftar. Our traffic and crime officers will work in coordination with the concerned parties to solve traffic problems at various important places including markets,” he added.
He said that action would be taken against anyone who illegally parks a car on the road.
“We have several challenges to face during Ramadan. The biggest challenge is traffic. Police are working to control the traffic. Traffic control requires the awareness and cooperation of city dwellers,” he added.
Police will not be able to solve the traffic problem overnight in a city where more than 2 crore people live, the DMP chief said.
“But we are optimistic that if everyone cooperates, then it is possible to solve the traffic problem. Businessmen of old Dhaka can solve traffic problems locally with the help of the police,” he added.
He said, “We hope that those who are doing renovation work on the road like WASA and other organisations are doing development work, they will stop these works keeping in mind the interests of everyone in the month of Ramadan. I will inform the concerned organisation by letter about stopping these works.”
DMP commissioner said the number of muggings and robberies increases during Eid, police will be vigilant to ensure security, he added.
When asked what measures will be taken to prevent robberies in empty Dhaka during Eid and during Ramadan, the DMP commissioner said, “Robbery is a problem. A special plan has been developed to solve this problem during the month of Ramadan.”
“Besides, illegal stockpiling artificial price increases and food adulteration are also challenges for us during the month of Ramadan. The police have already made a plan to solve these problems. Our uniformed and plain clothed member will work to solve these problems,” he added.
