Gas reserves have been discovered in well no 3 (Charkankra) in the Shahjadpur-Sundalpur gas field located in Sirajpur Union of Companyganj Upazila of Noakhali, Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) said.

“We officially ignited the gas at the lowest level of the well on Saturday. The drilling of the well, which started in November last year, was completed on Friday. Initially, gas was found in three zones of the well. The DST test is going on now. At the end of the test, the total amount of gas stored will be known,” Bapex Drilling Superintendent (Charkankra Well No 3) Md Asaduzzaman told media on Saturday (10 March.)

“There is a gas crisis in the country, the gas from this well will ease the problem. DST test of gas will be done in three levels of the well for the next three days. Then a rough idea of the total reserves of gas in the well will be obtained,” he added.

He said that gas from this well will be supplied to the national grid line as soon as possible after installing the necessary pipelines.

Sources also said about 10 million cubic feet of gas per day is expected to be supplied to the national grid per day.

However, the gas pressure in the lower zone seems to indicate that more gas can be obtained from the well.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Shahjadpur-Sundalpur gas field on 8 January, 2013.
