The interim government has expressed deep concern over a violent protest staged outside its Deputy High Commission in Kolkata by a Hindu organisation, Bongio Hindu Jagran, on Monday afternoon.
The demonstration escalated as protesters broke through police barricades and reached the High Commission's boundary, setting fire to the national flag of Bangladesh and burning an effigy of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammed Yunus.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka strongly condemned the desecration of the national flag and the effigy-burning, calling the acts deplorable and unacceptable.
The protest has raised significant security concerns among the Deputy High Commission's staff, although the situation is reportedly under control.
Bangladesh has urged the Indian government to take necessary actions to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure the safety of its diplomatic missions and staff in India.
"The Government of Bangladesh condemns any form of violent activity and emphasizes the importance of protecting diplomatic premises under international obligations," the statement added.
