At least three people have been killed as a bus overturned and fell into a ditch in Faridpur. The incident has also left at least 10 people injured.
“The accident took place at Babna Tala area of Bhanga Upazila of Faridpur on the Dhaka-Barisal highway on Friday (8 March) at around 2:10am,” Bhanga Highway Police Sub-Inspector Noman Sikder said.
One of the deceased has been identified as Shafiqul Islam Suruj, 45, from Panduria village of Sathia upazila of Pabna district. The other two have not been identified yet, police said.
According to witnesses, The bus belonging to Imran Travels, was speeding on its way from Barguna to Dhaka and lost control when it reached Bhanga on the Dhaka-Barisal highway.
The injured were first sent to Banga Upazila Health Complex and then to Faridpur Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College and Hospital.
On receiving information, police and fire service personnel reached the spot and conducted rescue operations.
The bus has been seized and is in the custody of the Highway Police.
The driver and helper of the bus ran away following the incident.
Police said the process of handing over the bodies to the families is underway.
