Workers of a ready-made-garments (RMG) factory staged a protest by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the Sreepur area of Gazipur demanding a salary hike and implementation of new salary structure.

“The workers of Zamzam Spinning Mills Limited blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway with various demands, including salary hike, in the Jainabazar area of Sripur in Gazipur from 6:30 am on Tuesday (5 March),” Mauna Highway Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Ismail Hossain said.

“At that time, there was a traffic jam on both sides of the road. Later they were moved from the highway and taken inside the factory with the assurance of discussing their demands with the factory authorities,” he added.

Police said traffic situation became normal around 8am.

The agitating workers said that the wages had been increased in all the surrounding factories but the factory they work for didn’t increase the pay.

“Our salary remains Tk7,000. The salary of a worker in the neighbouring factories is Tk9,500. We are underpaid and not paid on time,” said one of the protesting workers.
