In an ongoing operation, Keari Crescent Tower, a 15-story building located in Dhaka’s Jigatola, has been sealed off due to running 11 restaurants, violating the fire safety regulations.
A mobile court of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) led by its Executive Magistrate Md Jahangir Alam sealed the building after conducting a raid on it at 2:30 pm on Monday (4 March).
“The building has two staircases. The first one leading to the roof was found shut while another was seen blocked by placing gas cylinders. The situation made the team to shut the entire building,” said Jahangir.
The building was approved to house commercial offices but was largely taken up by restaurants, the executive magistrate added.
Fire service officials were present during the operation.
“The building lacks fire safety measures. And for this, banners were hoisted to raise awareness among the public,” said Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Tanhar Ul Islam.
During the raid, three people were held from the building, he added.
Earlier, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) sealed off 12 restaurants situated in the Gawsia Twin Peak building on Dhanmondi Satmasjid Road in the city.
These actions came four days after a deadly fire in a building on Bailey Road claimed the lives of at least 46 people.
