China extends condolences over Bailey Road fire

China has expressed condolences over the devastating fire incident in the capital Dhaka’s Bailey Road that tragically resulted in the loss of 46 lives.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi sent a message of condolence to his Bangladeshi counterpart Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday (4 March), said a statement by the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh. 

Wang Yi said he was shocked and saddened by the casualties caused by the severe fire at the shopping mall in Dhaka.

He expressed his deep condolences to the victims, extended his sincere sympathies to the families of the victims, and wished the injured a quick recovery.

A fire broke out on the ground floor of a seven-storey commercial building in Bailey Road at around 10:30pm on Thursday (29 February).

So far, 46 people have perished in the fire and dozens more are undergoing medical treatment in critical condition.
