The price of a 12kg LPG cylinder has increased by Tk35 to Tk1,456 in October, while the price of autogas has been raised from Tk65.26 per litre to Tk66.84 per litre. These new rates will come into effect from 6pm on Wednesday (2 October)..
Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has attributed the price hike to rising international market prices, as the country relies on imported LPG.
In a formal press conference, BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed announced the new prices on Wednesday.
Last month, in September, the price of a 12kg LPG cylinder stood at Tk1,421, while the price of autogas was Tk65.26 per litre. In August, the price of a 12kg LPG cylinder was Tk1,377.
Before 12 April 2021, LPG prices were at the discretion of the companies.
However, since then, BERC has based LPG prices on the rates announced by Saudi state-owned company Aramco, as it is an import-dependent fuel. The base price fluctuates with the Saudi market rates, although other commissions remain unchanged.
BERC has continued to announce LPG prices every month since the April 2021 decision.
Over the past three months, international market prices have been on the rise, resulting in a corresponding increase in Bangladesh.
However, consumers have raised complaints regarding the availability of LPG at the BERC-declared prices.
They allege that sellers are charging higher than the stipulated rates, and there are few reports of punitive actions being taken against such practices.
