Dr Yunus gets bail in money embezzlement case

Nobel laureate economist and Grameen Telecom Chairman Dr Muhammad Yunus secured bail in a case filed over embezzlment of money from the workers' welfare fund of the organisation.

Earlier in the day, Abdullah Al Mamun, Dr Yunus’ lawyer, made an application for bail in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge S Shams Jaglul Hossain on Sunday (3 March).

The hearing on the case took place in the presence of Dr Yunus on Sunday afternoon, following which he was granted bail.

On 1 February, Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Gulshan Anwar Pradhan filed a charge sheet against 14 people including Dr Yunus in the case filed on 30 May last year for allegedly embezzling Tk 25,22,06,780 of Grameen Telecom Workers Welfare Fund.

Among the other accused are - Grameen Telecom Managing Director Md Nazmul Islam, Director and former Managing Director Md Ashraful Hasan, Director Parveen Mahmud, Nazneen Sultana, Md Shahjahan, Noorjahan Begum, SM Huzzatul Islam Latifi, Lawyers Md Yusuf Ali and Zafrul Hasan Sharif, Grameen Telecom Employee Union President Md Kamruzzaman, General Secretary Feroz Mahmud Hasan, Union Representative Md Mainul Islam and Office Secretary Md Kamrul Hasan.
