The murder of a college teacher has sparked violent clashes between communities in Khagrachari and in light of the escalating situation, the district administration has imposed Section 144 indefinitely.

Khagrachari District Commissioner Md Shahiduzzaman imposed Section 144 on Tuesday (1 October).

The teacher, Sohail Rana was killed in a mob attack earlier in the day.

He was employed at Khagrachari Technical School and College.

The violence reportedly erupted after allegations surfaced concerning the abduction of a local indigenous woman by Bengali individuals, which was disseminated via social media earlier that morning.

Local sources have indicated that the unrest was exacerbated by a previous incident in 2017 when Sohail was imprisoned on charges of raping a tribal woman.

Following his recent release, he returned to work, only to be attacked by a group of indigenous individuals who stormed the school, leading to his death.
