Dhaka Transport Owners Association has announced a new decision regarding half-fare concessions for students on public transport in all metropolitan areas, including the capital city, Dhaka.
Under the new policy, students will now be able to avail of the half-pass benefit even on weekends.
This announcement was made on Monday (23 September), during a seminar held at the Engineering Institution Auditorium in Dhaka's Ramna, by Dhaka Transport Owners Association General Secretary Md Saiful Alam.
“Students have played pivotal roles in significant movements throughout our nation’s history—the Language Movement of 1952, the Liberation War of 1971, and the toppling of the authoritarian government in 2024. The country has attained its second independence. For a long time, students have been demanding a 50% discount on bus fares throughout the week. From 24 September, the half-fare concession will be applicable seven days a week,” he added.
He further added that from today onwards, students can avail themselves of this benefit upon showing their uniforms or photo identification cards.
The half-fare scheme will be effective all week, including weekends.
He also mentioned that the previous time frame (8:00am to 8:00pm) for the half-fare benefit has been extended, with the new timing being from 6:00am to midnight.
This decision will apply to all city buses operating on all routes within the Dhaka metropolitan area.
The seminar was chaired by Dhaka Transport Owners Association President MA Baten, and wa attended by senior officials from the traffic police department, along with transport owners and workers.
