Awami League General Secretary baidul Quader has said that the BNP faced another setback in the 12th national election and now has no option but to bide its time for the next five years.
"BNP-Jamaat has failed again. They have nothing to do but wait for five more years even after repeatedly boycotting the election. The allegations made during their press briefing today were baseless and impractical; they lied," Obaidul Quader said during a media briefing at party’s Tejgaon office in Dhaka on Monday (8 January).
He informed reporters that AL plans to organize a public rally on January 10 to commemorate Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day.
Despite a lower voter turnout attributed to the main opposition, BNP, boycotting the polls, Awami League is poised to form the government for the fourth consecutive term after securing a majority in the 12th parliamentary polls with 222 seats.
In the election, Awami League's nominated candidates secured victories in 222 constituencies. Independent candidates, primarily from AL, won in 62 constituencies, Jatiya Party in 11, and others in three, out of a total of 299 seats, as the polls for one constituency were suspended earlier.
Present at the press conference were AL presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, joint general secretary Bahauddin Nasim, and others.
However, BNP demanded the cancellation of the 12th parliamentary election and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, claiming that people unilaterally rejected Sunday’s voting at a press conference at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office on Monday.
