9 convicted militants have escaped, alongside many others awaiting trial

Following the fall of the Awami League government, 37 Members of Parliament (MPs) and ministers have been arrested and are currently held in various prisons across the country. 

Out of them, 9 are receiving division privileges in jail, said Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain, Inspector General of Prisons (IG Prisons) on Tuesday at a press briefing. 

The IG further reported that a total of 282 prison guards and officials were injured during the attacks on prisons amid the anti-discrimination student movement. Several of them were critically injured and later received treatment in various hospitals. Some guards and officials are still undergoing treatment.

When asked about the number of militants among the escaped prisoners and the measures taken to apprehend them, the IG Prisons said that 9 convicted militants have escaped, alongside many others awaiting trial. So far, a total of 70 militants are on the run.

Regarding the weapons looted during the attacks on the prisons, the IG Prisons disclosed that 94 firearms were stolen, of which 65 have been recovered.
